Custom Closets

Walk-in and reach-in systems built around how you actually store things, to your real ceiling height, in the panel that suits the closet, not a wire kit screwed into drywall.

Vertical space is the whole argument

Most closets waste the top eighteen inches and the bottom twelve. A builder-grade closet gives you one rod at one height and a single shelf above it, which is an efficient use of a wall only if your entire wardrobe is long coats.

A custom system is really a decision about the ratio of long-hang to double-hang to drawers to shelving, and that ratio is different for every household. We take an inventory at the consultation (how many long garments, how many folded, how many pairs of shoes, whether you want a hamper hidden or a safe built in) and lay the system out around those numbers. Then we build to your actual ceiling height instead of stopping at eighty-four inches because that is what ships flat.

Plywood or melamine, chosen for the closet

The closet kits sold as a weekend project are a rail screwed into drywall with thin shelving hung off it. They sag under folded denim and the shelf pins pull out of the core. That is the one thing in this category we would tell you to avoid outright.

Beyond that, the right panel depends on the closet rather than on a slogan. Where moisture is a factor, such as a closet on an exterior wall or anything backing onto a bathroom, laundry or mud room, we build in white or pre-finished plywood, which tolerates humidity cycling without swelling. Where moisture is not a factor, which covers most interior closets, melamine is often the better panel: the surface is harder and more scratch-resistant than paint, it stays flat, it wipes clean, and it costs less, so more of your budget goes into the layout instead of the substrate.

We will tell you which we would specify and why at the measurement, and the call is yours. It moves the price meaningfully and there is no single right answer for every closet. Either way the build is the same: dovetailed solid wood drawers, full-extension soft-close slides, six-way adjustable soft-close hinges on any doored section, and everything secured to framing rather than drywall anchors.

Everything is secured to framing, not to drywall anchors. The system is finished to match the rest of the house, using the same twenty-plus finishes we offer on kitchen cabinetry, so a master closet reads as part of the suite rather than as storage equipment.

Florida-specific details

Closets on an exterior wall in Tampa can run noticeably more humid than the rest of the house, especially in homes where the closet has no supply register. Where that is a concern we will leave deliberate air gaps at the back of the casework and avoid sealing the cavity completely, which does more for keeping leather and linen in good shape than any product you can add later.

Common questions

Common questions about custom closets

Both. A reach-in is often the better value per dollar. There is less square footage to work with, so the gain from double-hang sections and drawers is proportionally larger.

Melamine is usually the better value and genuinely the better surface in a dry interior closet. It is harder and more scratch-resistant than paint and it stays flat. Plywood is the right call where moisture is in play: an exterior wall, a closet backing onto a bathroom, a laundry or mud room. We will recommend one at the measurement and price both if you want to compare.

Yes. Same shop, same finish library, so a closet system can match or deliberately contrast with cabinetry elsewhere in the house.

Yes, bring it up at the measurement so we design the casework around it rather than fitting it in afterwards.

Our own crew installs. The people who measured and built the system are the ones who fit it.
